Martin Whitmarsh, team manager at McLaren from 2008 to 2014, is due to return to Formula 1 with a new role at Aston Martin.

Whitmarsh will become general manager of the Aston Martin Performance Technologies group, effective October 1, a role that “will encompass the brand’s Formula 1 operations”.

Team owner Lawrence Stroll said Whitmarsh’s expertise would help Aston Martin in its journey to transform into “a Formula 1 World Championship winning organization over the next four to five years”.

Stroll added, “Martin has enjoyed a long, successful and high profile career spanning the motorsport, automotive, aerospace, marine and renewable energy industries.

“Plus he’s a proven Formula 1 winner. So he’s the perfect person to work with me and our management team to lead and inspire our staff to future success, on and off the track.”

Whitmarsh, 63, involved in America’s Cup and Formula E sailing since leaving McLaren, said: “I know what it takes to win in Formula 1.

“Inspired by Lawrence’s leadership and supported by the skills, passion and determination of the workforce, I intend to do everything possible to ensure that our team becomes the winning operation that Lawrence is determined to be it. “

Team principal Otmar Szafnauer added: “Martin’s arrival will allow me to devote 100% of my energies to making Aston Martin a winning machine.
