BAY CITY, MI – A Bay City man accused of soliciting sex with someone he believed to be a minor, but who was in fact an undercover police officer, has pleaded guilty.
Scott M. Myers, 25, appeared Monday, Nov. 23 before Bay County Circuit Judge Harry P. Gill, and pleaded guilty to the two counts he faced: accosting children for the purpose immoral acts and using a computer to commit a crime. The charges are respectively four and ten years crimes.
The convictions will also force Myers to register as a sex offender.
The charges relate to an incident on August 9, 2019 at the Cass Avenue boat launch in the south of the city. Gill asked Myers what makes him guilty.
“I had, a few days before August 9, been on the internet to a site called Omegle,” Myers said. “This is a chat site where you can enter your interests and it will randomly connect you with other people to talk to.”
Myers said he listed “Michigan” as one of his interests so he could find people living in the same state. He said he ended up being matched with someone who claimed to be 14.
Gill asked him what Myers did next.
“After a few minutes of chatting on the site, we moved the conversation to an app called Kik, which is like a social networking site where you can message people, back and forth,” Myers said. “Finally, we planned to meet on August 9 at the boat dock with the goal of having sex. I showed up that morning and that’s when I was arrested.
The alleged 14-year-old boy was actually an undercover Michigan State Police soldier, court records show.
The Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force investigated the case. The unit encourages parents to talk to their children about safe internet use.
“There are many resources available to parents to help keep children safe online,” the unit said in a press release. “The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children provides a comprehensive list of resources on its website at http://www.missingkids.org. “
Those with information regarding possible sexual exploitation of children are encouraged to report it to the CyberTipLine at http://www.missingkids.org/cybertipline.
Myers is free on bail and is to be sentenced by Gill at 1:30 p.m. on December 28.
